This energetic ride through a bustling city highlights the wonderful perspective only grandparent and grandchild can share, and comes to life through Matt de la Peñ a's vibrant text and Christian Robinson's radiant illustrations.
Cj and his Nana walk from church to the bus stop; ride on the bus until the last stop; and then walk to their destination. The action is rather uninteresting really, but it is the conversation and the people that are memorable. CJ presents himself as quite discontent, feeling sorry for himself, and inquisitive. Each question is met with an encouraging answer from grandma, who helps him see the beauty… and fun… in their routine and the world around them. I think we all long for someone like Nana in our lives - a woman who has seen life, is a quiet observer with few words of her own, and yet chooses her one-liners precisely and perfectly.
Winner of the 2016 Newbery Medal
A 2016 Caldecott Honor Book
A 2016 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Book
A New York Times Book Review Notable Children's Book of 2015
A Wall Street Journal Best Children's Book of 2015
