Details
Chronicles of a Lizard Nobody follows Zeke, a monitor lizard, who faces the challenges of fitting in at his new school after being brought in as part of a district blending program. As a reptile among zebras, ostriches, and elk, Zeke struggles with the fact that while he's not bullied outright, he doesn't blend in either. The turning point comes when Principal Wombat assigns Zeke, along with his friends Daniel and Alicia, to be hall monitors. Zeke initially resists, unsure why a reptile would be trusted with such a responsibility, until he discovers that mammals are secretly afraid of reptiles, particularly their hissing. This tactical move by Principal Wombat makes sense, but Zeke is reluctant to embrace it.
When Zeke crosses paths with Pelicarnassus, a notorious pelican supervillain (when his mother isn't around), things take a more dramatic turn. The school suddenly feels like a war zone, and Zeke begins to wonder if he could be the unlikely hero his school needs. Full of comic moments, the story explores themes of grief, bullying, and overcoming differences. The book is smart and relatable, with black-and-white illustrations that add graphic appeal, making it an engaging and humorous read for middle-grade readers.
